Apple has finally gotten round to shipping it’s improved twin driver in-ear headphones that it originally scheduled for October 2008 (better late than never). The headphones include separate drivers, one for bass and mid-range (woofer) and one for high frequency sound (tweeter) for richer, more detailed and accurate sound (in theory). They’re also sound isolators similar to the likes of Shure, Etymotic and Sony as well as many other brands on the market today. All that is very well, but there are likely better headphones available from other manufacturers; the one feather in the hat for Apple with these headphones is the built in remote. The ‘control capsule’ is inline on the right earpiece and includes a microphone, pause/play/skip button and volume control. The kicker is that although all the buttons work with the majority of modern iPods, the volume buttons don’t in fact work with the iPhone (but do with the iPod Touch). Now at least for me, that would make me purchase these headphones over others (as long as they turn out to be acoustically good) just for volume control of the iPhone. Why Apple? Why exclude a very logical function for your No. 1 selling phone?
